Inspiring Women/Ladies in ICT

A while back the Department of Information Systems and Computing at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton held an event named ALUMNI TRACER VISIT – 2013 with a THEME: “Looking into a brighter future from windows of the Past” the event involved inviting alumni from this department to hold talks with students to inspire them and share their experiences. I am very grateful that this event accomplished its aim to inspire the students but also this is not the only positive effect that came out of this event.alumni tracer3
During this event Simeon Oriko who is the co-founder of the Kuyu Project and Deputy Executive Director of Jamlab who is proudly an alumni of the University of Eastern Africa Baraton took an initiative to hold talks with the ladies in the Department of Information Systems and computing encouraging them in their endeavors in the men dominated ICT field. And out of these talks was born the all-girls arm of BITSA (Baraton Information Technology Students Association which is the official club for the Department of Information Systems and computing)
The all-girls arm of BITSA has officially started their impact on the community around the university by holding an ICT literacy drive to SBASS (Segero Baraton Adventist Secondary School).
New folder1
According to a report that was drafted by Jemima Akilimali, the presentations which took place in the schools main hall included but were not limited to:
1. The basics of IT (Information technology)
2. Importance of computer
3. Career opportunities in IT
4. Internet
5. Women and IT
New folder
She goes on to mention that although the event was successful they were able to observe that the School has no computer which she put across as a very great problem that affects not only this school but many others within Africa.
There was a total of 184 students who attended the literacy drive which was a good turn up. Out of 184, 81 were ladies which still shows that considering the fact that the population of ladies is higher than that men, there is need to put emphasis on exposure of ladies to educational opportunities. Two teachers were also present during the event.
“It was a good experience and we had a lot of fun with the students and answered all the questions that they had concerning the IT world” said Jemima.
The Information and communication Technology industry is dominated by men in Africa and all world round, there is a great need for us to help empower women in this industry, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who are putting an effort towards the accomplishment of this matter.
In the same way in many parts of Africa there is still need to educate ladies not only in ICT but as well as other disciplines, there is still a great gap to be filled in providing equality of opportunity to the girl child in Africa. Lets join hands in bringing impact to Africa to make it a better place to live in.

Young innovators- Senior Project Presentation

I am currently attending the senior project presentation for Bachelor of Science in Software engineering students at the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton in the Department of Information Systems and computing. And I realized that its through these projects that we come up with, that we can be able to bring change to the community around us and Africa as a whole.
During this presentation the Students in their last semester of their undergraduate program as Software engineering majors, showcase their innovative software projects which they have worked on since their enrollment in school as a requirement for their graduation.
Here is an overview of the Projects presented today:

Mobile accounting system
The solution presents a mobile accounting application that records all transactions for small scale retailers. The technologies used are j2me, http, mysql and php. This is a book keeping system that will help small business owners to better manage their accounting records by providing a user friendly interface. The solution does not require the user to have complex prior accounting knowledge. Reports are generated and sent via sms and or pop ups while running the application

Smart Attendance System
It is an attendance system for students in an institution it comprises of technologies such as Android Mobile Application, Online JSP System and USSD mobile system. The entire project involves automating the picking of attendance and clearing the absences resulting thereof. The students only need to present their student ID and swap it on the smart card reader to indicate their attendance in the appointment. Further, absences can be checked conveniently from the mobile phone. The system has been developed in Java, android, php,and jsp programming languages.

In his own words Godfrey explains “My project is a Computer generated image (CGI) of a waving flag using blender, CGI is the application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images.”
He says that “If you want to make an advertisement yet you do not have the funds to hire actors and film crew you could create an animated clip for your advertisement using a 3D computer graphics software product.”

Intelligent Mobile Image Scanner is an intelligent mobile+ image recognition application.Utilizing prestored data in a MySQL server, randomized captured images are processed and actual persons with all details embedded are converted to useful, relevant yet accurate and valid information. It is predesigned with a deep consideration for utility in security and surveillance systems.
Francis is also a co- founder of SoftCall Communication which is; A systems Developer firm integrating Software development, APIs and Software Integration with a kernel thinking of a futuristic approach with a main vision of solving all-human dimensions problems in a universal and on a platform of technology systems. SoftCall seeks to entwine hard and soft technology with peace as the ultimate of all its projects.

The Head of the Department of Information Systems Mr. Joshua Ndiege says that the projects that are presented are amazing and they tackle real life problems around our society but the biggest problem is that these projects are just presented as a requirement for graduation and many at times they end here at the presentation room. Very few projects at this point end up in the real world while many of them die out.
On a meeting with him a while before the presentation on a discussion on a TECHUB based at this University that is meant to empower the innovators in this University and others around the region Mr. Joshua Ndiege says he has intentions of changing the way senior projects are done, he explains that the students will be encouraged to go and implement the projects in real world scenarios so that instructors can go out there were the projects are implemented and grade them according to their performance and problem solving potential, by so doing the projects will have helped in the betterment of the community before they are graded in School.

“It’s within our desire and passion that with the help and consideration of different empowerment programs we can be able to plan and host nationwide gaming events like LAN bashes within all Universities in Kenya and Africa in a whole” Says Gathemia Michael.
He goes on to explain, “Kenya is currently undertaking the most expansive Tech Project in Africa, the building of the first Silicon Valley, Konza city. Its our dream and vision that this great opportunity shouldn’t pass us by. We strive to be the first gaming company to establish itself within this dynamic and highly tech oriented environment. We wish to pursue a lot of innovative ideas, concepts and take third generation entertainment to new heights which would revolutionize gaming and social networking. it’s a core desire that in reaching out to secure high internet speeds and host gaming platforms, and by this we will be assisting in attaining our Kenya Vision 2030.”
I would like to thank my G4K brothers for the impact they have made and congratulate them on the courage they took to start and keep this dream alive and floating believing that its by such startups that we will have change in our world.

What I have lived for–Bertrand Russell

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next because it relieves loneliness- that terrible loneliness in which one in shivering consciousness, looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable, lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. this is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what-at last- I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. A little of this but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims of torture by oppressors, helpless old people a heated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

And by these words I kick start this blog and those of you who might want to ask me why I do what I do, you might want to visit the words of this great man and find the answers right here. Lets work our best to bring change to our rich and good continent of Africa.
